A note on the evolution of kabuli chickpeas as shownby induced mutations in Cicer reticulatum Ladizinsky
A Study by Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Akdeniz University, Antalya, 07070, Turkey
This article studies a mutation of the domestic 'Kabuli' chickpea; which has been found to have a definated daughter plant, which is a direct descendent. This daughter chickpea; C. Reticulatum was noticed and iscolated due to it's white flower and pale seed coating. This differed from the dometic chickpea which has a pink flower and dark brown seed coating.
This variation supports the evolutionary theory that the 'Kabuli' chickpea domesticated from a smaller seeded chickpea plant. The new chickpea plant is being considered a further step in the evolution of the chickpea.
