Dawn of the Dead

Ever wondered what a real life Wooly Mammoth would really look like? Or maybe you've pondered how mean a saber tooth tiger really is? Well it may one day be possible to clone long extinct species provided we have their DNA and a suitable surrogate.

The publication of the near finished Wooly Mammoth genome in November last year, sparked debate over wether it would indeed be possible to successfully clone an extinct species. There is only the remotest possibility if the whole genome is successfully mapped out. This is hardly common and therefore only likely if the species became extinct in the last 100,000 years. However it has been suggested that the animals we should be looking to clone first, are those that are currently facing the greatest threat of becoming extinct.
