The article, "Gene Links Autism, Bellyaches", suggests that there is a gene that links autism and gastrointestinal problems. It says that the secret is in the MET gene, and that autistic children with the MET-c variant are more likely to have stomach problems then those with the MET-g variant of the gene. Neurologist Martha Herbert later suggests that autism may not (as widely believed) be caused by difference in brain structure, but from bodywide dysfunction in cells.
