This article highlights the recent discovery of the gene responsible for the production of tooth enamel. The gene, “Ctip2” is a transcription factor that has already been identified to be responsible for immune responses and skin and nervous system development.
This discovery was made at the College of Pharmacy of the University of Oregon, where this gene was “knocked out” of a mouse model. The mouse was unable to survive due to the lack of biological systems which was expected, but scientist found its rudimentary teeth lacked the enamel coating. This discovery according to Chrissa Kioussi, assistant professor at the College, will lead to the ability to use teeth stem cells to produce new enamel on teeth.
