Genetic technology claims to have the capability to allow parents to choose everything from special abilities to hair and eye colour. Genetic manipulation has already been occurring for about 3 years, with parents now able to choose their children’s sex for approximately $,12,500. It is predicted over the next 10 to 20 years that genetic scientists will be capable of enabling parents to engineer their future children.
The technology is already routinely being performed in mice and other mammals and humans are just one small step away. The option of engineering children saw strong opposition from the majority of parents. However picking out traits for your baby is just the superficial side to the technology; theoretically, genetic technology would also allow scientists to make your baby super resistant to disease. Majority of parents felt the health of the baby blurred the moral lines of the technology and would not mind their child to be protected from diseases in this way. It seems that a major moral debate is not far off in the scientific field of genetics.
